Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan and undefeated Hawaii face SEC powerhouse Georgia in the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day. Georgia was hoping to play in the BCS Title game but was surpassed by LSU in the final BCS poll. "We feel like we got shafted a little bit," safety Kelin Johnson said. "The numbers don't add up. The numbers do not add up. The numbers do not lie. That's what is confusing. I don't know what's going on." SBG Global reports that early college football betting has the public taking Georgia at Home.
Sugar Bowl Betting Preview
Hawaii (12-0) vs. Georgia (10-2)
Tuesday, 8:30 pm Eastern – FOX
SBG Global Opening Line: Georgia -6.5 , Total 70
Georgia was poised to take over the #2 spot in the polls but LSU jumped over the Bulldogs and landed in the BCS title game. Now Georgia has to face unbeaten Hawaii and quarterback Colt Brennan. Hawaii played a weak schedule and was only able to move up to 10th in the polls but that was good enough to land Hawaii in a BCS bowl game. If Hawaii is able to upset Georgia a lot of people may start wondering how a team can go unbeaten and still not win the National title.
The key for Hawaii will be the play of quarterback Brennan who leads the highest scoring offense in the nation. Hawaii put up 46.2 points per game. Brennan holds the NCAA record for career passing touchdowns. He has topped 4,000 yards and 35 touchdowns through in each of the last three seasons, completing over 70 percent of his passes. He will finally get a real test as he faces Georgia’s defense. "If we're having success and doing things right, it really can put a defense in a bind, no matter who you are," Brennan said. "We've never been stopped. We only have stopped ourselves. If we make the right reads and the right adjustments, I don't think anybody can stop us."
SBG Global Current Line: Georgia -8 , Total 69
Hawaii’s defense will have their hands full as well. They will try and stop running back Knowshon Moreno who finished as the SEC’s second best rusher behind Arkansas' Darren McFadden "I was just trying to help my team in any way possible," said Moreno. The Bulldogs also have a solid quarterback in Matthew Stafford who can put up points as well. Hawaii’s defense is better than in past seasons. Only three opponents exceeded 30 points against them this year. Hawaii led the WAC in sacks and the pressure forced opposing quarterbacks into 19 interceptions. They may have a tough time getting pressure on Stafford. He was sacked only 14 times during the season.
If the game comes down to special teams then the edge goes to Georgia. They are extremely well coached under Mark Richt. They rank near the top of the SEC in returns, coverage, punting and placekicking.
