Both teams will be meeting for the first time for tonight’s 2010 Alamo Bowl Picks & Predictions. Texas Tech will be making its third appearance in the Alamo Bowl, and are searching for win number one. The last time they played was in 2001, against Iowa who defeated them 19-16. Michigan State played the Alamo Bowl in 2003 to Nebraska and also lost 17-3.
Both teams have currently been dealing with public controversy, starting with the Red Raiders recent firing of Head Coach Mike Leach. Leach was suspended and later fired for the alleged mistreatment of an injured player. On December 28th, 2009, Ruffin McNeill (defensive coordinator) was named interim head coach of Texas Tech.
Michigan State has also felt some stress after having 11 players suspended on November 22nd by coach Mark Dantonio. The players were caught in a dormitory brawl, and will be sitting out for the Alamo Bowl.
“My heart breaks for those guys,” Spartans’ quarterback Kirk Cousins said. “The fact that they’re not there with us for this bowl game – it will hurt. But at the same time, there are other guys who we work with who have not had as much of an opportunity to play who are now going to have that opportunity.”
