Atlanta failed to match last year’s unexpected level of play, but this year’s Falcons, despite winning three fewer games (10-6), may be better equipped to deal with the rigors of the post-season.
Atlanta’s defense, while no juggernaut, is superior to last year’s version, ranking 12th in the league in yards per game allowed (333.6). The offense remains just as potent with weapons in the backfield and on the outside. The biggest question mark is under center as Matt Ryan, while dependable, has yet to prove he is an elite level, Super Bowl caliber quarterback.
Ryan may get an opportunity to show his detractors wrong today; a solid performance on the road against the Giants formidable pass rush would certainly make a bold statement. Ryan, as well as the Falcons, come into this game red hot, having won three of their last four games. The former first round pick has played a huge role in the team’s strong finish, throwing for 1,023 yards, 10 touchdowns, and zero interceptions over the final quarter of the season (124.5 passer rating).
Ryan’s hand will need to stay hot this afternoon if the Falcons hope to take down the Giants. New York also enters this game with a head of steam, having compiled a 3-1 record in its last four contests.
The Giants have been particularly impressive the last two weeks, pounding the Jets and Cowboys 29-14 and 31-14 respectively. While Eli Manning has struggled some of late (83.6 quarterback rating the last four games) and the defense ranks a distant 25th in yards per game allowed, this is a playoff savvy bunch.
With both Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs healthy, the offense is dangerous on the ground and through the air and the defense possesses the greatest of post-season equalizers, a devastating pass rush.
The Falcons, which have lost three straight to the Giants by an average of 12.3 points per game, are a significant threat, but they are catching New York at the wrong time and in the wrong place. Giants -3.
