There are playoff long shots and then there are the Denver Broncos. The Broncos 8-8 record and three game losing streak to close out the regular season are, obviously, major factors in the team being listed as a +4000 moneyline play in the latest 2012 Super Bowl Odds, but another reason for their slim chances has to do with the location of this weekend’s Divisional Round game. Yes, Denver will face the AFC’s top seed, New England, a team which has won 22 of its last 25 home games.
Feeling jilted? Try being the Denver Broncos. Apparently their Wild Card upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers, last year’s AFC Champion, meant nothing. Tim Tebow and company are a +13.5 road dog at New England this week, and most prognosticators are having difficulty even finding a scenario where Denver keeps the game close.
In all reality the Broncos should not feel stiffed in any way. Anyone who watched Pittsburgh post the Ben Roethlisberger injury knew the Steelers were not the same team. To take nothing away from Denver, it beat a good team in a playoff game, but there is no way Pittsburgh should have been a 7.5 point favorite, especially playing on the road.
The Patriots, on the other, have earned the 13.5 point line in this weekend’s contest. Sure, the Broncos played reasonably well away from home this season, beating division rivals Oakland, San Diego, and Kansas City along with Miami and Minnesota, but taking out New England at Gillette Stadium is a different assignment entirely.
Tebowites can pray, fast, cover themselves in sack cloth and ash, but it will be to no avail; this Denver team is going to visit the Northeast this Saturday, but a trip to Indianapolis is not in the cards. But hey, if you want to risk $40 to win $400, be my guest.
