The New Orleans Saints are playing as well as any team in football right now, but they are still playing second fiddle to the defending Super Bowl champion Packers. Green Bay is the favorite to win it all in the latest 2012 Super Bowl Odds, but the Saints are viewed as the third most dangerous team of the eight left, registering at +300 moneyline odds to win their second championship in the last three years.
The Saints, winners of nine straight counting last weekend’s Wild Card win over the Lions, are arguably the most explosive team in the NFL right now. New Orleans can score at the drop of a hat and often times does, particularly when it matters most.
The Saints have a host of valuable offensive parts, as many or more than Green Bay, but the engine behind their multidimensional attack is quarterback Drew Brees. Brees is considered one of the three best signal callers in the NFL, but it could be argued that he is, indeed, the league’s top passer. His numbers this season make a potent case as he lead all quarterbacks in pass yards (5,476 – new league record), touchdown passes (46), and completion percentage (71.2).
In spite of Brees gaudy numbers and the often unstoppable nature of the offense, New Orleans is not without its problems. The defense gives up far too many yards (368.4) and the team finished -3 in turnover margin, a stat seldom seen among clubs with double digit wins.
The Saints warts tend to be most visible when they are on the road and, unfortunately for New Orleans fans, that is exactly where the team will play this weekend and, most likely, the next should they slip past San Francisco. That is not to say Brees and company will not find their way to Indianapolis, though. While New Orleans did suffer all three of its losses on the road, they won their last three away outings, two of which came against winning teams.
Were the Saints playing the rest of their games at the Superdome, they would be my pick to win the NFC, but, even on the road, they remain a strong option.
