Will the last team in be the last team standing? That is the question many New Yorkers are asking as their 2011 Giants bear a striking resemblance to the team that upset the heavily favored Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The latest 2012 Super Bowl Odds would suggest Tom Coughlin’s crew stands a pretty good chance. The Giants are presently listed at 3 to 1 odds to win the franchise’s fourth Lombardi Trophy.
New York Giants Super Bowl Pros -
Been there, done that: Yes, the Giants barely qualified for the playoffs, but right now no one is disputing their post-season credentials. New York is red hot, having won four games in a row and five of its last six, but also working in its favor is the fact that it has played on this stage before. The Giants took a similar path to Super Bowl glory a few short years ago, which means Eli Manning and his cohorts know what this looks and feels like.
Offense: The Giants are never mentioned in the same class as New Orleans, Green Bay or New England when discussing offenses, but no one can deny their ability to move the ball and score points. New York averaged 24.6 points and 385.1 yards per game during the regular season and they may be the most well-rounded offense left in the post-season with the ground game beginning to hit its stride.
Defense: A month or two ago this would have counted as a weakness, but the Giants have completed a monumental turnaround over the last several weeks, an about-face which they hope did not culminate in Green Bay last Sunday.
New York Giants Super Bowl Cons -
Travel: New York visited San Francisco in week 10 and the result was not a good one for Coughlin and his troops. The finish probably had more to do with the 49ers and less to do with a long flight, but, man, is that a long flight. Going to Green Bay then back home then out to California, well, it may not affect the Giants at all, nevertheless, if they could get a closer venue, they would take it.
Inconsistency: While New York seems to have shed its Jekyll and Hyde nature, their regular season flip-flop has to be mentioned. The Giants 24-20 week nine win at New England marked their sixth victory in seven games, but New York lost four straight following that unexpected win, a run which nearly resulted in the team spending the playoffs at home. If they experienced a collapse like that after their crowning regular season moment whose to say they are incapable of face planting once again?
