But one can’t stress enough how important the step prior to all this speculation is: beating Peyton Manning and the top-seeded Indianapolis Colts. According to the colorful Jets head coach, Rex Ryan, his tem wants to hit Manning and hit him often during their AFC Championship showdown this Sunday. Apparently, Ryan and his defense believe that they’ve found a weak spot in the 4-time MVP’s game.
“He doesn’t want to get hit,” New York Jets safety Kerry Rhodes said Wednesday after watching film of Mannng. “So, if there’s a free guy, he’ll actually just go down and give up the sack. If you get pressure on him, once you do that, he gets to talking to his linemen and they’re a little edgier and a little rattled.”
By taking one look at the stats, one can see that there’s in fact some truth to that, if you can get to No.18, that is. All season long, the Colts offensive line allowed just 10 sacks all year on Manning, the fewest in the league.
“I compare him to a conductor in an orchestra,” Jets defensive tackle Sione Pouha said. “He knows when to call for the trumpets, the violins and the cymbals and when to bring them all in one accord. With the offense, he’s just able to orchestrate the best way to get at a defense.”
The last time these teams played, the Colts were waiving the white flag at their chances of a perfect season. Ryan’s defense held Indy in check for the two-plus quarters Manning didn’t play. The rest of the time, they realized that giving this guy time means disaster for any defense.
“You can’t let him sit back there and get his feet planted and throw with ease,” New York linebacker Calvin Pace said. “We need to get him off his spot a little bit, give him a couple of different looks that he hasn’t seen. There is no one better than Peyton Manning, and everybody knows that.”
