The only virtual lock this NFL season was that Sportsbook.com would be rooting for the New England Patriots’ opponents to cover the spread on a weekly basis but will Super Bowl 42 Predictions be any different? Thanks to the “betting public’s” propensity to back favorites paired with New England lambasting everyone in their path during the first couple months of the season, Sportsbook.com routinely lost whenever the New England Patriots took the field. The second half of the season, including the playoffs was a whole other matter. After starting the season 8-0 ATS, New England failed to cover eight of their next 10 games. Despite their covering woes, bettors still backing the New England Patriots despite the consistent double-digit spreads.
After taking a glance at Sportsbook.com’s “Betting Trends” it appears as if Sportsbook will be rooting for the Patriots for once, come Super Bowl 42. With about a week and a half of betting in the books, only 25% of the early bettors have faith that the Patriots can cover the 12 points they are laying. Of, course the Patriots’ recent covering issues aren’t the only reason bettors are pounding the New York Giants. Since the third week of the season, New York covered 13 out of their last 17 games including their last five. With a 7-2 record with six outright wins, the Giants flourished in the role of underdog. Playing away from home wasn’t an issue either as the G-Men covered 9 out of 11 times.
In order for the Giants to have the best shot at covering and possibly winning the game outright, New York can’t let Randy Moss run wild. In the Pats’ first 10 games (9-1 ATS) Moss averaged 105.2 receiving yards per game and scored 16 times. In their last eight games (1-7 ATS), his numbers plummeted to 59.1 receiving yards and 7 scores.
Applying pressure on Tom Brady and hopefully forcing turnovers is a couple of other obvious keys. The Giants led the NFL in sacks this season (53); however, the Patriots are adept at protecting the quarterback giving up just 21 sacks this season.
The biggest key for a Giants’ cover on Super Bowl Sunday will be the play of Eli Manning. The chronically inconsistent Giants’ signal caller has been nothing short of magnificent over his last four games. Having completed 64% of his passes while throwing 8 touchdowns to just 1 interception, Giants backers are betting on another great performance, whereas Patriots bettors are counting on Eli to crumble under pressure.
With almost two days of betting action left to go, it will be interesting to see if the late bettors continue to pound the Giants at such a high percentage (75%), or whether Patriots bettors are waiting until the last minute to hopefully get the best value for their bet.
