Giants vs Patriots Pick 2012 Super Bowl

by Tyler Morgan on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012

patriots brady under pressureWith the season’s biggest game less than four days away everyone is clamoring to find a side in what, by all accounts, should be a tightly contested affair. Thus far the action appears to be even on both sides as the line has not moved off its three point opening spread. What can be lost in the race to pick a side, though, is a solid play on the total. The latest 2012 Super Bowl odds have Sunday’s Over/Under set a 54 points, a number many expect these two high scoring teams to sore past.

Giants vs Patriots Pick 2012 Super Bowl: Under 54 Points

While the Over looks like the exciting, sexy play in this game, the Under is the smart one. Yes, the last few Super Bowls have been relatively high scoring affairs and, yes, the Giants and Patriots are both adept at finding the end zone; however, both squads have done a good job of limiting their opposition of late.

New York has given up an average of 13.4 points per game in its last five games and it did so against teams that combined to average 26.1 points per game during the regular season. Consequently, the last Giants game to exceed 54 points was a December 11th meeting with the Cowboys in Dallas.

New England’s defense, while much maligned during most of the regular season, has also done a decent job keeping teams out of the end zone over the last few weeks. The Patriots last three opponents, Buffalo, Denver, and Baltimore, combined to score 51 points. New England has also tightened up its red zone defense in the playoffs, giving up just two touchdowns in seven opponent trips inside its 20 yard line (gave up 52.94 percent during the regular season).

I anticipate each side getting a fair amount of points in this game, but it should look more like the two championship games or, rather, the first meeting between these two teams when the Giants prevailed 24-20 than some sort of shootout.
