Oakland Raiders Sign Jeff Garcia: Well-traveled quarterback, Jeff Garcia has found a new home in an all too familiar place, the Bay Area. On Monday, the 39-year-old veteran play-caller joined the dysfunctional Oakland Raiders with a one-year deal to be JaMarcus Russell’s backup.
Raiders senior executive John Herrera stated that the fourth-time Pro-Bowler will join the club’s offseason workout program immediately.
Garcia spent the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he started in 24 games and led them to a division title and a playoff berth in 2007. Tampa bay was also the place where Garcia earned his fourth Pro Bowl selection.
Last season’s numbers prove that Garcia can still play in this league: 2,712 yards passing and a 90.2 passer rating with 12 touchdowns and just 6 interceptions. Despite those statistics, the Bucs decided not to re-sign the durable QB, as new coach Raheem Morris is apparently going with Brian Griese or Luke McCown at the position.
Garcia, a native of Gilroy, CA, will be making more than the league minimum with the “Silver and Black”. Allegedly, he chose the Raiders for the chance to continue his career close to home with a familiar coaching staff. With the San Francisco 49ers, Garcia passed for 16,408 yards and 113 touchdowns on his way to three Pro Bowls and two playoff appearances.
