Tampa Bay Buccaneers Give Kellen Winslow Contract Extension: On Monday, the often-problematic and ever-imposing, Kellen Winslow of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, received a six-year, $36.1 million contract extension that will make him the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.
According to Winslow’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, the deal includes $20.1 million of guaranteed monies, which is a new record for a tight end. Furthermore, with the incentives, the deal could be worth up to an eye-popping, $42.1 million.
“The Bucs were open to something long-term,” Rosenhaus said. “It’s nice to get it done.”
The Bucs began contract negotiations with the Pro-Bowler soon after the February 27 trade that sent Winslow back to his home state from the Cleveland Browns. Last week, the former University of Miami standout participated in the Bucs’ voluntary minicamp.
Winslow was the sixth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. His career has been marked by plenty of highs and lows, but most of all by lots of controversy. Over the last five seasons with the Browns, the 25-year-old TE grabbed 219 receptions for 2,459 yards and 11 touchdowns. With a new coaching staff in place, the Buccaneers are counting on him to play a major role in the offensive scheme this upcoming season.
On other Tampa Bay Buccaneers Notes: The Bucs decided to pass on veteran Pro-Bowler, Jeff Garcia, as Luke McCown, Brian Griese or Josh Johnson will be tossing the rock to Winslow this season. On Monday, Jeff Garcia signed a one-year deal to become JaMarcus Russell’s back up with Oakland Raiders.
