2009 NFL Draft Results: With Day 1 of the 2009 NFL Draft Results in the books, the Detroit Lions made headlines by selecting quarterback Matthew Stafford from Georgia, as the No.1 overall pick.
For a team that made NFL history last season, going winless the entire way (0-16), they now get a guy they can build around for the future. With his big-play ability, because of his big arm, the 6’ 3” 237-pound, Stafford, is an ideal fit for what Detroit wants to do on offense.
With the second overall 2009 NFL Draft Results, the St. Louis Rams selected 6’ 6” 305-pound tackle out of Baylor, Jason Smith. By acquiring Smith, the Rams took one of the most athletic lineman in this year’s 2009 NFL Draft Results, a huge void for St. Louis at that position. Smith can play various positions due to his great and rare ability to move his feet, being a former tight end.
The Kansas City Chiefs possessed the 3rd overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft Results. With so many holes to fill, the Chiefs decided to go with 6’ 5” 290-lb DE Tyson Jackson of LSU. Jackson is considered by many to be one of the few five-technique defensive ends in the Draft. With his great run-defense ability, length and natural talent, Jackson should have an immediate impact on the Chiefs’ D-line.
After an atrocious season, the Seattle Seahawks got the 4th pick in this 2009 NFL Draft Results’ first round. One of the biggest voids in Seattle’s defensive scheme was at the linebacker position. The Seahawks took care of the problem by picking Wake Forest’s 6’ 3” 247-lb linebacker, Aaron Curry.
After trading up all the way from 17, the New York Jets hit the jackpot in many experts’ eyes as they selected 6’ 3” 225-lb quarterback, Mark Sanchez out of USC. With Sanchez, the J-E-T-S get a franchise quarterback who is very smart with, accurate, and should be an ideal fit in the Big Apple and their West Coast offense.
