NFL Betting Odds to win AFC South

by Abe Luciano on Sunday, June 15th, 2008

The Indianapolis Colts are the leaders of the best division in the NFL and this year they will accept nothing less than a Superbowl win in Tampa. The nucleus of last year's 13-3 remains intact for Indianapolis but their division foes have all have strong rosters. The Jacksonville Jaguars are the #1 contenders equipped with a defense full of All-Pro's and the best tandem of running backs in the NFL. Tennessee will be depending on their own stout defense and a bounceback season from super athletic QB Vince Young. Houston has the best WR in the land not named Randy Moss in Andre Johnson, and the Texans have upgraded their squad on both sides of the ball. The NFL Betting Odds to win AFC NFL Betting Odds to win AFC SouthSouth at internet shop Sportsbook.com has the Indianapolis Colts at heavy 1-2 chalk.

1. Indianapolis Colts- Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning are still the #1 contenders next to the New England Patriots to win the Superbowl with last year’s 13-3 team returning 20 of 22 starters. Overlooked by many is the fact that the Indianapolis defense allowed the fewest points per game 16.4 in the league. Led by NFL defensive player of the year Bob Sanders the Colts shutdown offenses with their cover-2 defense despite being hit hard by injuries. The disruptive pass rushing duo of DE’s Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis make this defense scary.  The AFC South isn’t a cream puff division anymore though, and Indianapolis will be under resistance all season from their division foes. Running back Joseph Addai had a subpar year (4.1 yards per carry) by his All-Pro standards, but look for a bounce back year with over 2000 Total yards. Peyton Manning will be operating with a full deck with a healthy Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzales all big play targets. The NFL betting odds to win the NFC South has the Indianapolis Colts as chalk at 1-2. The Indianapolis Colts were an above-average 9-7 ATS last season.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars- The AFC South is arguably the strongest in the NFL and the Jacksonville Jaguars unfortunately are the second best team in it. Having to lock horns with the Indianapolis Colts twice a year is no easy task but the Jaguars were one to two players away from being on par with the Colts, and this year they might have evened the playing field. Jack De Rio has proven himself to be a formidable NFL mind and he has a smart QB in David Garrard. Del Rio added 6'4" 220 wideout Joey Porter and speedy WR Troy Williams (4.3 40-time) in the off-season. On defense the Jaguars took a hit by losing DT Marcus Stroud, but the Jaguars dis a nice job upgrading  the D-line in the draft and adding All-Pro CB Drayton Florence to the secondary. The NFL betting odds to win the NFC South has the Indianapolis Colts as chalk at 1-2. Jacksonville Jaguars were a decent 9-7 ATS last season.

3. Tennessee Titans – The Titans made the playoffs a second year in a row with QB Vince Young who will look to make a third consecutive trip this season. Young had an off-season but with a new offensive coordinator and some new weapons in place at RB and TE, Young could have a breakout season. On defense the key will be off-season addition DE Jevon Kearse who will team with Albert Haynesworth on the D-line to make a forceful unit. Ball hawking linebacker Keith Bullock rounds out an imposing front seven. In the secondary the Titans have a physical secondary that is one of the 10 best in the NFL. The NFL betting odds to win the NFC South is Tennessee Titans  8-1. Tennessee Titans were an ordinary 8-8 ATS last season.

4.Houston Texans – Head coach Gary Kubiak has the Texans on the right track and this year he is poised for a playoff run. After a strong off-season netted the Texans some help at OL, RB, DL and DB the Texans are ready to build on their 8-8 2007 finish. On offense own on of the best QB to WR combinations in the biz with QB Matt Schaub to WR Andre Johnson. Johnson is a gamebreaker that could be an MVP candidate this season. The defense is lead by dominating DE Mario Williams and linebacker DeMeco Ryans. Early in the season Houston could be vulnerable to the pass with All-Pro CB Dunta Robinson recovering from an injury. The NFL betting odds to win the NFC South is Houston Texans 10-11. The Houston Texans were an average 8-8 ATS last season.
