NFL Betting: Baltimore Ravens AFC North Preview PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 24 June 2008

Disastrous, disappointing, ill-fated - welcome to the Baltimore Ravens 2007 season. Yes, the purple and black befuddled pundits and fans alike on their way to a 5-11 finish. The year went so poorly that long tenured, narcissistic Head Coach Brian Billick was summarily shown the door. The 2008 season will mark a new direction for the team as secondary coach John Harbaugh was handed the reins. Despite the change, or maybe because of it, NFL Betting Odds at SBGglobal.com have the Ravens win total set at 6 with the OVER a +100.

While it may have seemed like Baltimore flashed its usual dominance on defense last year, in reality they did not. Despite ranking sixth in the league in yards per game allowed (301.6), the Ravens were a miserable twenty-second in points per game allowed (24). Unfortunately for Baltimore fans, that's the only statistic that really mattered. That said, there is still enough talent for the Ravens on their defensive unit to get the ship righted, especially if they can continue to hold opponents under 80 yards per game rushing as they did in 2007.

Baltimore's offensive unit looked dreadful at best last season. The only positive for this beleaguered unit was a middle of the road ground attack led by Willis McGahee. The off-season saw the retirement of quarterback Steve McNair and Pro Bowl left tackle Jonathan Ogden. Management continued to show their lack of faith in quarterback Kyle Boller by drafting highly touted Delaware QB Joe Flacco. Flacco will certainly be groomed by the coaching staff to be the starter sooner rather than later. The team also added wrecking ball running back Ray Rice out of Rutgers, further solidifying their backfield.

Baltimore is looking up a pretty steep hill and at the top of it is a tough Steelers team. This fact is not lost on the line-makers, NFL Betting odds at SBGglobal.com have the Ravens at +750 odds to win the AFC North and +5000 odds to win the Super Bowl.
