NFL Betting: Washington Redskins NFC East Preview

by Steve Hastings on Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

The second Joe Gibbs era ended this off-season without the success of the first. While Gibbs certainly showed that the game had not totally passed him by (two playoff appearances in four years), he was not able to led the Redskins to the Super Bowl. Unlike previous hires, the Redskins opted for a fresher face to replace Gibbs. Former Seattle quarterback Jim Zorn was given the task of returning the team to past glory. NFL Betting odds at BodogLife.com are currently giving Zorn and the Redskins 35/1 odds of doing that.

The addition of former Kansas City coordinator Al Saunders did not do much for Washington's offense. The Redskins were not terrible, but they still only churned out 20.9 points per game. They were not able to crack the top ten in any major offensive category, and the offensive attack never resemble the dominant one Saunders oversaw in KC. New coordinator Sherman Smith will get to work with largely the same bunch Saunders did. Quarterback Jason Campbell should be recovered from last season's knee injury and he has some weapons around him. Running back Clinton Portis is dangerous when healthy and receiver Santana Moss can be a game breaker. The Redskins are trying to upgrade too; they drafted exclusively offensive players with their first four draft picks.

Aside from moves on the coaching staff, Washington did not do a whole lot. It was a somewhat unique off-season for Dan Snyder as he re-signed mostly his own free agents. This is just as well because defensively the 'Skins did not need too much upgrading. Last year they ranked eleventh in the league by holding opponents to just 19.4 points per game. The Washington defense was particularly effective against the rush, holding teams to a 91.3 average. This tough unit should be no different in 2008. New coordinator Greg Blanche knows them well; he handled defensive line coaching duties the last four seasons.

NFL Betting odds at BodogLife.com currently have the Redskins at 14/1 odds to win the NFC Championship and 6/1 odds to win the NFC East.
