In 2007, first year coach Lane Kiffin failed to make the Raiders look like anything but the, well...Raiders. In recent years the franchise has become more synonymous with mediocrity than excellence. The Raiders will again try to capture old glories this season, but they face an uphill battle. NFL Betting odds at SBGglobal.com have Oakland listed at +10,000 odds to win the Super Bowl. Last season Oakland did little right on offense aside from rushing the ball well. The team had a quarterback carousel much of the season and number one overall pick JaMarcus Russell hardly saw action until the final two games of the year. Kiffin will no doubt have Russell under center from day one in 2008. This move, coupled with the additions of wideout Javon Walker and Arkansas running back sensation Darren McFadden, should give the Raiders more continuity on offense. Kiffin is hoping that this year's squad can crank out more than just 17.7 points per game. The Raiders fielded a good defensive unit in 2006, but last season's group fell off and it did it in big fashion. Oakland allowed 24.9 points per game and gave up 145.9 yards per game on the ground. The Raiders only had five draft picks so they were not able to load up on defensive players. The only big name defensive players that they brought in were former Giants safety Gibril Wilson and Falcon cornerback DeAngelo Hall. Oakland will need some young players to improve rapidly if they are going to slow opponents better in 2008 than they did in 2007. NFL Betting odds at SBGglobal.com list the Raiders at +800 odds to win the AFC West and +3000 odds to win the AFC Championship.
