Last season the Jacksonville Jaguars rebounded from an 8-8 2006 record in a big way. Head Coach Jack Del Rio named quarterback David Garrard the starter in the off season and Garrard rewarded his coach by leading the team to an 11-5 regular season mark and a 31-29 playoff win at Pittsburgh. Even bigger things are expected of the team this year as NFL Betting odds at BodogLife.com list the Jags at 6/1 odds to win the AFC Championship. The 2007 Jaguar offense had relatively few hitches thanks to the man calling the signals. Most everybody knew that David Garrard was a capable quarterback, but his numbers last season were shocking. His 102.2 passer rating ranked third in the league and he threw a league low three interceptions in 325 pass attempts. He set the bar pretty high for himself in his first full season as a starter. Coaches, teammates, and fans will expect more of the same in 2008. Aiding Garrard was the league's second best rushing attack. Jacksonville running backs, led by Fred Taylor, averaged 149.4 yards rushing per game. Home run hitter Maurice Jones-Drew also made his presence felt by scoring nine touchdowns last season. Jacksonville added wide receivers Jerry Porter and Troy Williamson this off season. The team seems to have a log jam of adequate receivers but has lacked a real go to guy. The hope is that Porter can fill that role and take the offense to even greater heights this season. While the Jaguar offense made big strides last season, the team continued to be characterized by a hard hitting, no nonsense defense. While their numbers weren't staggering, they got the job done -- especially at home. The team allowed 19 points per game on the season (10th), but they held opponents to just 14.25 points per game at ALLTEL Stadium. This off season the team lost defensive coordinator Mike Smith (Smith was named head coach of the Falcons). Del Rio wasted no time in finding an all-star replacement in Gregg Williams. Williams brings a vast amount of knowledge to the position and a reputation as one of the best defensive minds in the game. The club did lose some players in the off season too, including defensive tackle Marcus Stroud and last year's leading tackler - Sammie Knight. They did, however, add former Charger corner Drayton Florence as well four defensive draft picks. NFL Betting odds at BodogLife.com list Jacksonville at 12/1 odds to win the Super Bowl, 2/1 odds to win the AFC South, and -125 odds to win more than 10 games.
