Denver Broncos Pay Mike Shanahan to Not Coach? Who would pass up $ 7 million to keep their lips zipped? In order to continue to be the highest paid coach in the NFL, former Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan must not spill the beans about the team that cut him lose in December.
Shanahan had two years and $14 million left on his contract, when he was fired by Pat Bowlen at the end of last season, after his team missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

So how does he get paid? Simple really. His contract had a tiny little clause that said he could not talk about his former team and that he could not take another coaching position.
Shanahan’s decision to follow through is yet to be seen, as he has stated recently that it he could be coaching in the near future.
He spoke to NFL.com and said, "I plan on getting back… I probably spent more time studying football the last offseason than I have the last 10 years. I watch a lot of film and do the same thing I do during the season. I'll see if there are any opportunities out there at the end of the year that will work out for the club and myself."
