Washington State Cougars 2009 College Football Predictions, Picks & Odds: Second year head football coach Paul Wulff has his work cut out for him to improve on the Washington State Cougars 2-11 finish last year. The 2009 schedule is tough with only five home games, four of them against PAC-10 opponents. It may take another win over lowly Washington in the Apple Cup to match last year’s win total. Odds makers at Sportsbook.com have college football predictions on the Washington State Cougars listed as a long shot with 25 to 1 odds to win the BSC 2010 National Championship.
The offense, which ranked last in the Pac-10 in total yards last year, at least has potential. Injuries forced Coach Wulff to forget about his intended no-huddle offense, but that will change this year. Senior signal caller Kevin Lopina is the likely candidate to be under center, but will be pushed by sophomore Marshall Lobbestael. Running back is the Cougars’ most promising position with Dwight Tardy and Logwone Mitz battling to hold off James Montgomery, who sat out last year after transferring from Cal. Chris Ivory, Marcus Richmond and Chantz Staden are also in the crowded running back mix. The line should be improved, and expect hands-on coaching from Wulff, who was a center on the Cougars’ 1988 team that won the Aloha Bowl. Sportsbook.com has college football picks on the Washington State Cougars listed at a +5000 odds to win the PAC-10 Conference.
Defensively the Cougars were worst against the run in the nation in 2008 and some changes are needed if improvement is on the way. The Cougars were short on talent and depth last year on the defensive line but should have an upgraded group this year, led by end Kevin Kooyman and junior college transfer tackle Bernard Wolfgramm. Andy Mattingly and Louis Bland are high energy linebackers that can help. The Cougars have several key players back in the secondary, including starting free safety Chima Nwachukwu, strong safety Xavier Hicks and corner Romeo Pellum.
Nico Grasu kicked game-tying and game-winning kicks in the Apple Cup, so to most Cougar fans, it didn’t matter what he did the rest of the season. Winning the Apple Cup is always a good end to a bad season!
