Arizona State Sun Devils 2009 College Football Predictions, Picks & Odds: Arizona head football coach Dennis Erickson is entering his third year and at 62, has his work cut out for him. After a 10-3 season in 2007, last year’s 5-7 record was a huge disappointment. On Erickson’s behalf though, it has taken him two years to recruit the kind of speed he wants on the team and it should be evident in this year’s defense. Odds makers at Sportsbook.com have college football predictions on the Arizona State Sun Devils at 200-1 odds to win the BSC 2010 National Championship.
Senior quarterback Danny Sullivan and sophomore Samson Szakacsy, have never started a game. Sullivan is slated as the starter but there is speculation both will be used if he falters. The Sun Devils are without a premier running back and will have to rely on one of these inexperienced quarterbacks to predominately throw the football. Arizona State has a veteran group, but it doesn’t have a true No. 1 target. Senior Chris McGaha leads all active Pac-10 receivers in receptions, but he was bothered by injuries last season, and he’s more of a possession receiver than a deep threat.
Any success the team finds this time around will be because of the defense. There is talent all over that side of the ball and none may be better than Dexter Davis. The senior defensive end tallied 11.0 sacks in 2008. With Lawrence Guy also returning to the defensive line, the Sun Devils front four should be one of the best in the conference. The group in the middle is equally talented with the return of linebackers Mike Nixon and Travis Goethel. College football picks at Sportsbook.com on Arizona State are +1800 odds to win the PAC-10 Conference.
The Sun Devil special teams should be strong. Placekicker Thomas Weber won the Lou Groza Award as a freshman and has made 86 percent of his career field goal attempts
