Chargers Philip Rivers Inks Contract Extension: On Monday, San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers became a wealthier man, signing a 6-year contract extension though the 2015 season worth a reported $93 million, out of which $38 would be guaranteed.

“This is a great day for the Chargers and Chargers fans,” team president Dean Spanos stated. “Philip has proven he has all of the necessary qualities to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. He’s a proven winner and an unquestioned leader for this football team.”

Rivers got the big bucks after proving that he could put up some monster numbers last season. The 6-year man out of North Carolina State set a new team record for touchdown passes with an NFL-high 34 scores.

In the process, Rivers also set a new team record with a 105.5 QB rating, which was another league-high in 2008. Rivers’ 4,009 passing yards (NFL regular season) were fourth best last season among quarterbacks, only behind: 1. Drew Brees (5,069 yards), 2. Kurt Warner (4,583) 3. Jay Cutler (4,526) 4. Aaron Rodgers (4,038).

Thus far in the 2009 Preseason, the San Diego Chargers are just 1-1, but are among the sports betting odds favorites to have a shot at winning the 2010 Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, Florida.
