We should get a pretty good idea of how good the No. 5(AP) ranked Boise State Broncos will be this year fairly quickly. College football predictions pundits already have the Broncos picked to win the Mountain West. They open their 2011 schedule with the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sept.3 Chick'fil A Classic at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. This game isn't drawing the same attention as last years opener with Virginia Tech but it will be a good measuring stick. BSU's schedule will be a little more difficult as they begin their debut season in the Mountain West Conference, however not as good had Utah and BYU stayed.
The Broncos return six starters from an offensive unit that ranked second in the nation last year in both total offense that averaged over 45-points per game. Seven starters return for the Boise State defense, which ranked second nationally in both total defense and points allowed.
BSU is balanced in all areas of the team. Senior Quarterback Kellen Moore is on every major awards watch list including the Heisman Trophy. The Broncos also boast of placing seven players on the preseason All-MWC team, including two anchors on the offensive line, Thomas Byrd and Nate Porter. While the offense gets plenty of attention, the Broncos would not have achieved their level of success without a quality defense. Leading the nationally ranked defensive unit are two defensive line preseason All-MWC picks Shea McClellin and Billy Winn.
It’s my opinion the Bronco’s are legitimate. I know that’s difficult for folks in the Southeast part of the country to fathom, but its true. I also think the Bronco’s have the talent and coaching to put a pretty good whipping on the Georgia Bulldogs; even in Atlanta. These BSU junior and senior players are used to the limelight; something winning two Fiesta Bowls and season opening wins over Oregon (twice) and Virginia Tech the past three years.
