Coach Kill likes to keep the ball on the ground and the team ranked third in the conference last year in rushing offense. The offensive line returns three starters and has a few experienced backups ready to step into a starting role, so the ground game should be just fine. In fact, they should be better than fine.

Senior Mike Salerno continued the recent tradition of excellent kickers at Northern Illinois. Salerno nailed clutch field goals and missed only two attempts between 20-39 yards. His ability to punt helps if a capable replacement for four-year starter Andy Dittbenner is not found. Junior college product Josh Wilber is the leading candidate to replace Dittbenner. Kill is seeking a gamebreaker to handle punt and kickoff returns. Brown led the Huskies in both areas as a freshman.
