When the upstart Lions faced the 
Buccaneers last December, they came away with a 23-20 overtime victory despite being listed as a four point road dog. Detroit's Matthew Stafford-less offense produced 27 first downs and 433 total yards in the win, overcoming a 21-of-32, 251 yard, one touchdown effort from the Bucs Josh Freeman.
The exciting conclusion to that contest, coupled with the good vibes surrounding these two recently downtrodden franchises has resulted in some ramped up anticipation for Sunday's battle.
Tampa Bay, which finished 10-6 last season (4-4 at home), did little through free agency to upgrade its roster, but, by most accounts, the Bucs had an outstanding draft. With its first two picks Tampa added defensive linemen Adrian Clayborn and Da'Quan Bowers, which, along with third round pick linebacker Mason Foster, should help bolster a defense that gave up an average of 131.7 rush yards per game last season.
Offensively the Bucs appear to have enough key pieces in place to transform into a top 10 NFL unit. Freeman has all the physical and mental intangibles to develop into a premiere quarterback and he has two reliable targets in Mike Williams and Kellen Winslow as the pair combined for 131 receptions and 16 touchdowns a season ago.
Detroit, like Tampa Bay, looks on the verge of greatness with several rising stars filling out its roster. Stafford, Ndamukong Suh, Calvin Johnson, Brandon Pettigrew, and Jahvid Best all possess All Pro potential.
Head Coach Jim Schwartz also looks to have changed the culture of losing that has characterized the franchise for the better part of the last 15 years. Yes, the Lions finished four games under .500 last season, but they won their final four games in 2010, including a 7-3 upset of the Super Bowl champion Packers.
That run changed more than a few minds about Detroit, included some within the organization.
This may be the most difficult week one game to call, hence the one point line. The Bucs -1 is the recommendation, though.
