New England Patriots Sign QB: After the reigning NFL MVP Tom Brady went down, so did the New England Patriots’ faithful hopes of winning a Super Bowl this season. However, on Wednesday Bill Belichick and the Pats said not so fast, as they signed QB Matt Gutierrez to their practice squad.
Gutierrez, will spend the remainder of the week practicing with the team, and will most likely be activated and eligible to play in time for Sunday’s game against Brett Favre and the (1-0) New York Jets.
At BetUS.com, the New England Patriots are actually +1½ NFL Week 2 betting odds underdogs when they take on the New York Jets (-1½).
Matt Gutierrez spent all of last year as the Patriots third string quarterback (behind Tom Brady and Matt Cassel), but was released by the team after the 2008 preseason.
When it came time for the final cuts before the start of the NFL regular season, Gutierrez was let go of. He had originally signed with the Pats before last season as a rookie free agent out of Idaho State.
In last week’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, 2nd string QB Matt Cassel saved the day for NE. After Brady went down, Cassel went 13-of-18 for 152 yards, 1 touchdown, and 0 INTs.
