Virginia vs USC 2010 College Football Picks, College Football Predictions & College Football Odds: The new USC era began last week with anything but a great performance, now the Trojans will have another shot to look better this week against the Virginia Cavaliers at 10:30 PM ET. USC won their first game of the post Pete Carroll era 49-36 against the Hawaii Warriors last Thursday in a poor show by their defensive unit. The Warriors passed for 459 yards and ran for another 129 giving the Trojans secondary way more troubles than they expected.
Coach Lane Kiffin was anything but pleased with that presentation: “We didn't do it in the style that we wanted. We want to be tough, we want to be disciplined. I thought we were tough today. I thought that we played physical in parts of the game, but we weren't disciplined."
However on offense the Trojans did look at their best as sophomore QB Matt Barkley threw for 257 yards and five touchdowns, three of them were passes to wide receiver Ronald Johnson. Barkley looked awfully calm in the pocket not even feeling any of the pressure the Warriors wanted to put on him.
On the other side the Cavaliers beat the Richmond Spiders 34-13 to secure their first win of the season. The senior QB Marc Verica threw for 283 yards and score and no interceptions but the running back Keith Payne was the true star of the game with 114 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the night; he will be looking to have a similar performance against a USC defense that left more doubts than anything after week one.
In order to upset the USC Trojans the Cavaliers need to stop Matt Barkley at all cost, something that is not as easy as it sounds. Virginia will also need to win the battle of the trenches, when they have the ball they need to give Payne enough room to make some serious damage. Consider Virginia is 6-0 OVER in non-conference games and USC is 1-5 ATS off a non-conference game.
