NFL Week 2 Picks

by Matt Foust on Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

NFL Week 2 Picks: Well, the betting public wasted no time forcing the odds makers' hands as several lines moved since yesterday's open. Among those fluttering about are the Chiefs/Lions, Cardinals/Redskins, and Packers/Panthers. Those NFL Week 2 Picks shifted from 7.5 to 9, 4.5 to 4, and 10.5 to 9.5 respectively.

The Chiefs/Lions game opened at 7.5 NFL Week 2 Picksbased upon Kansas City's wretched performance against the Bills. How could a team that played that poorly possibly stay within a touchdown of a talented but green Lions team in Detroit must have been the thinking. Then came news that safety Eric Berry, a key defensive piece for the Chiefs, was out for the year with a torn ACL. The public jumped all over the Lions at that point, pushing the line to nine.

Personally, I would not touch this game. Kansas City finished 10-6 a season ago, but they were a Jekyll and Hyde bunch in doing so. The Chiefs lost horribly to the Broncos, Raiders, and Chargers last year, but they also embarrassed a number of teams, including the Seahawks, Cardinals, Rams, Titans, Niners, and Jaguars. Point is, KC is capable of rebounding this week and giving a youthful Lions squad all it can handle. And, of course, they could get drilled by three touchdowns at Ford Field. Advice: Approach with caution.

The Cardinals/Redskins opened at 4.5 with Washington giving points. Enough money has come in on the Cardinals to warrant a half a point shift. My own speculation? Bettors are not quite willing to buy into the Rex Grossman led 'Skins just yet. Grossman can look fantastic at times but he can also look like the second coming of Ryan Leaf.

That brings us to the Packers and Panthers, a line that has, surprisingly, moved in favor of Carolina. Green Bay opened as a -10.5 favorite, but Carolina is now taking 9.5 points. This must have a little to do with Cam Newton and a lot to do with Green Bay being a 3-5 road team last season. The Packers lost at Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, Detroit, and New England as their offense struggled to put points on the scoreboard (15.4 points per game). This is a new season, though, and this is a healthy Green Bay team. Please, please, please keep the money coming in on the Panthers.
