Week 2 NFL Picks

by Abe Luciano on Friday, September 16th, 2011

Week 2 NFL Picks: It seems that starting the season by tying the NFL record for longest field goal ever, while recording a huge win over an AFC West foe in the Denver Broncos, wasn’t enough for the Oakland Raiders. The Silver and Black wants more! It appears that the Raiders organization isn’t satisfied with being tied with Jason Elam and Tom Dempsey in the NFL record books for the longest kick ever.

Thus, the Raiders have decided to appeal the spotting of the ball for Sebastian Janikowski’s record-tying, 63-yard field goal to a 64-yarder. Elam did it in 1998, while Dempsey’s feat dates back to 1970. In 2011, “Seabass” should stand-alone, the Raiders claim, according to the San Fran Chronicle.

Speaking of the greatest ever, Raiders punter, Shane Lechler, who’s also Janikowski’s ball-holder on his field goal attempts, may have blown his teammate’s chances at winning this appeal. The 8-time All-Pro told reporters he thought about spotting the ball a yard further in order to break the record rather tie it.

However, Lechler claims that the importance of that kick, within the context of the game itself, was enough to deter him from doing it. This is kind of surprising considering Janikowski is infamous for kicking over 70-yarders during pre-game warmups throughout his career.

“We were a full yard in front of it, completely. There was no hesitation,” he admits. “Maybe if the score had been last year’s score (35-7 at halftime) but not in that situation.”

This week, the (1-0-0) Oakland Raiders [+3½] will try to start the season with a 2-0 record as they take on the NFL Odds favorite (1-0-0) Buffalo Bills [-3½]. This game is scheduled to get underway Sunday afternoon at 1 PM ET from Ralph Wilson Stadium. The OVER/UNDER between the Raiders and Bills is set at a projected total of 43½ points.

My Week 2 NFL Picks for the Raiders vs Bills: I actually like the Raiders in this game. This team, not only has a ton of talent, but it’s good enough to compete against anyone in the AFC West because of two reasons: defense and a guy by the name of Darren McFadden. If the Raiders can avoid shooting themselves in the foot by staying away from dumb penalties, Hue Jackson will be 2-0 to start the season.
