Panthers vs Falcons Free NFL Picks

by Steve Hastings on Friday, September 18th, 2009

Panthers vs Falcons Free NFL Picks: The Carolina Panthers are trying to prove that the last two games was just an aberration and that they are still a playoff caliber team when they travel to Atlanta to play the surging Falcons. These teams seem to be heading in opposite directions with Carolina headed to the cellar and Atlanta on their way to the penthouse.

The Falcons looked dominant in a 19-7 win over Miami while the Panthers looked unsure of themselves in an embarrassing 10-38 loss to Philadelphia. The NFL handicapping experts at VegasSharps.com have noticed that almost all of the Free NFL Picks have been on the birds but the line has remained steady at the Atlanta Falcons -6 points against the Carolina Panthers.

Atlanta Falcons Offense vs. Carolina Panthers Defense: The Falcons have one of the best offenses in the NFL with QB Matt Ryan and RB Michael Turner. Atlanta now has dangerous weapons all over the field in the passing game to take the heat of All-Pro RB Turner when teams load the box. New Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez is a menacing red-zone target that also should keep the Panthers strong pass-rush at bay. Matt Ryan is not real mobile but he has a sound O-line in front of him that will also hold a big edge in the running game. Carolina’s DB’s are decent but are susceptible to TE’s which is bad news when playing Tony Gonzalez.

The Free NFL Picks experts at SBG Global have the Panthers vs Falcons Total set at 42.5 points.

Carolina Panthers Offense vs. Atlanta Falcons Defense: Carolina QB Jake Delhomme’s play is truly the key to how well the Panthers execute on offense. Delhomme is a streaky player that has 11 turnovers in his last 2 games but can be among the NFL’s best when he is on. Delhomme’s primary targets WR’s Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad hold a major edge over the Falcons cornerbacks. To break Delhomme out of his funk the Panthers will need to pound the rock with their two excellent  RB’s DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Williams and Stewart should have some success behind a strong O-line that is facing a so-so Atlanta front seven.  If Carolina can’t run the ball effectively the Falcons raging pass-rush could tear Delhomme at the seams.

Intangibles: These teams split a pair of games last season. Atlanta head coach Mike Smith is 8-1 SU at home. Atlanta is 2-7 ATS in their last 9 against the NFC South. Atlanta 1st round pick DT Peria Jerry could miss this game with a knee injury.
