Dallas, after sufffering through a
miserable 6-10 season last year, nearly got its 2011 campaign started with a huge upset road win. Nearly is the operative word, though, as the Cowboys puked away a 14 point fourth quarter lead to fall to the Jets 27-24 at MetLife Stadium last Sunday night.
Dallas finished the night with 21 first downs and 390 total yards against New York's vaunted defense, which suggets the team will be able to move the ball with a healthy Tony Romo under center. However, in order for the Pokes to reach the next level and become a legitimate NFC threat, Romo must eliminate the mistakes that so often derail Dallas' momentum.
Romo produced a great stat line on Sunday, throwing for 342 yards and two touchdowns, but a fourth quarter interception to Darrelle Revis had an enormous impact on the game. It was not the reason the Cowboys lost, but it certainly did not help close out a contest they should have won.
Romo may not have to worry about any mistakes this afternoon if the 49ers do not find a way to manufacture some offense. San Francisco posted 33 points in last week's win over the Seahawks, but 14 of those came in the game's final minutes when Ted Ginn returned both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns.
The Niners, which converted just 1-of-12 on third down, managed all of 12 first downs and 209 yards of offense in the victory. The most troubling aspect of San Francisco's offensive performance were the 85 rush yards churned out on 32 carries. Frank Gore ran for 59 yards on 22 attempts and he failed to find the end zone.
If Jim Harbaugh hopes to make it 2-0 on the season, he must find a way to get the ground game working against the Cowboys. A one-dimensional San Francisco team will get blown out. The much maligned Alex Smith can do some things when given time in the pocket, but without the threat of the run, he will not be afforded a great deal of protection. Yes, he only got hit one time last week, but the Seahawks do not have a player with the skills of DeMarcus Ware.
