Georgia vs. Arkansas College Football Picks: Saturday's ESPN prime time game (6:45 pm ET) will take place in the Ozarks for what looks to be an explosive matchup between No.20 (AP) Georgia Bulldogs and unranked Arkansas Razorbacks at Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville, Ark. Hogs coach Bobby Petrino is expected to show the nation his version of hog wild when he unleashes his high flying Razorbacks, led by Michigan transfer, sophomore quarterback Ryan Mallett, against the battle tested Bulldogs.
Georgia didn't start its 2009 college football season with a couple of warm-ups as so many teams do. No, they opened by going to Stillwater, Okla., for a date with then No. 9 ranked Cowboys of Oklahoma State ( a loss) and a home game (a win) with SEC East rival South Carolina in week 2.
Georgia quarterback Joe Cox had a career-high 201 yards passing and two touchdowns in the win over USC. Cox tallied career highs of 201 yards passing on 17 completions for two touchdowns in the 41-37 win over USC. Against USC, A.J. Green hauled in six catches for 86 yards, including an acrobatic TD catch just before halftime. Richard Samuel rushed for a career-high 87 yards on 20 carries against Oklahoma State before picking up 65 yards and a touchdown versus the Gamecocks.
While much is anticipated from the 2009 version of the Arkansas Razorbacks, they are considered an unknown commodity coming into week 3. The Hogs rolled (FCS) Missouri State by the score of 48-10 in week 1, hardly a measuring stick for an SEC school. In the game the Razorbacks passed for a school record 447 yards behind the efficient work of sophomore Ryan Mallett and freshman Tyler Wilson. Both quarterbacks had sustained touchdown drives for the Razorbacks as Arkansas combined to hit 30 of 41 attempts with a lone interception.
Malletts 309 passing yards were the second-highest for a Razorback quarterback ever in a season opener. All-SEC running back Michael Smith opened the season with four carries for 43 yards and a touchdown. He now rushed for 1,655 yards and 15 career touchdowns. Against Missouri State, Jarius Wright had six catches for 139 yards, both career highs. His receiving total of 139 yards was more than Missouri State’s team total of 123.
While there is no such thing as a college football picks betting lock, one thing is for certain in this game. The total could surpass the posted 54 1/2 by by half-time. Arkansas is expected to score many points this season on the passing of Mallett but the question facing the Razorbacks is its defense, a unit ranked near the bottom of many NCAA statistics in 2008. Reports the defense is improved are coming in but until Arkansas shows it on the field there will be doubts.
