Former Giants WR Plaxico Burress Sentence Gets 2 Years Sentence: It’s emotionally draining, but more so, hard to believe that less than two years ago, the New York Giants and hero wide receiver Plaxico Burress were rejoicing as they were America’s best team: the 2007 Super Bowl Champions.
Today, there were still cameras present, there was still a great deal of attention and there was emotion, but there was no joy at all, only
silence and tears. The former Giants Super Bowl savior traded in his expensive outfit for a prison jumpsuit, as he was sentenced this morning in a Manhattan criminal court room to serve a 2-year sentence.
"I want to apologize to my family," Burress said before being taken away to serve his time for his conviction on weapons possession charges 10 months after he shot himself in a New York City nightclub. "I love you," the 32-year-old whispered into his 3-year-old son’s ear, Elijah.
Burress will be taken to Rikers Island, where he will undergo a series of tests and psychological evaluations before determining where he will serve the rest of his sentence.
Just to think that less than two years ago, Burress made the biggest play on the grandest stage in sports, shortly after signing a $35 million contract with one of the best franchises in the world. Now, the earliest that Burress could be a free man again would be in early June of 2011, pending good behavior.
