Forgive Texans fans if they are not buying
in yet; this team has teased them for years, but no more so than last season when it opened the year at 4-2 before going on to finish 6-10. Houston's 2-0 start is commendable, but their upcoming slate, starting with Sunday's game at New Orleans, will give a better indication of where Gary Kubiak's squad stands.
The Texans, which rank 14th in yards per game (364.5) and, shockingly, first in yards per game allowed (271), face Pittsburgh, Oakland, Baltimore, and Tennessee before closing out the month of October with a home game against AFC South rival Jacksonville.
Kubiak indicated at Monday's press conference that he believes this team has a little more staying power.
"I just think we've got a lot more poise," Kubiak said. "Nobody's in here jumping around, high-fiving each other today. We're just in here business as usual trying to correct our mistakes, trying to understand what we're going to have to do better to win in New Orleans. So, from that standpoint, I think it's a little bit more mature group than we've had in the past."
New Orleans, which almost came back and won at Green Bay in week one, rebounded from that loss with a statement type win against the Bears on Sunday. Offensively the Saints produced 382 yards as Drew Brees threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns while the defense held Chicago to 246 yards. Greg Williams unit, which got shredded by Aaron Rodgers and the Packers, also sacked Jay Cutler six times and hit him 10 others in the 30-13 victory.
New Orleans, a 5-3 home team a season ago, is not beyond laying an egg at the Superdome, but the Saints will provide a huge jump in competition for the Texans, who have faced Indianapolis and Miami. Expect Houston's new 3-4 defense to be challenged early and often in this one, and forget about the Texans being first in yards per game allowed at the conclusion of Sunday's game, especially with the Steelers (No. 2 at 274.5) taking on the Colts.
