It has been a tough week for the Bengals,
which fell to 1-1 with a 24-22 road loss at Denver on Sunday. First, wide out Jordan Shipley saw his season end in Denver due to a knee injury. Second, Cincinnati wide receiver Jerome Simpson, who caught four passes for 136 yards against the Broncos, had his home declared a marijuana distribution center by local authorities. Third, running back Cedric Benson was suspended for three games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
While the loss of Shipley and the potential loss of Simpson hurts, Benson's absence is the biggest blow to the team, particularly in this weekend's meeting with the 49ers. San Francisco presently ranks first in the league in rush yards per game allowed (54.5), but Benson's presence would, at the very least, force the Niners to respect the run.
Now rookie quarterback Andy Dalton figures to be the focal point of San Francisco's defense, which is probably not a good thing for the TCU graduate. Dalton has performed admirably thus far, throwing for 413 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions in his first two NFL starts; however, he did not face the most daunting of pass rushes in either of those outings.
San Francisco, which has six sacks on the season, possesses a far more efficient pass rush than the Broncos and it is, at a minimum, the equal of the Browns. Cleveland roughed up Dalton in a season opening loss to the Bengals, sacking him four times, but the Browns pressure was somewhat neutralized by their inability to stop Benson (25 carries, 121 yards, one touchdown).
The 49ers, with Benson out, should be able to pin their proverbial ears back and make life miserable for Dalton.
