2011 College Football Rankings Week 5

by Matt Foust on Sunday, September 25th, 2011

2011 College Football Rankings Week 5: For a second straight week LSU moved up one place in the AP Poll, but this weekend the Tigers assumed control of the top spot with a 47-21 drubbing of what was No. 16 West Virginia in Morgantown. Previous No. 1 Oklahoma won 38-28 at home over Missouri, but, obviously, the pollsters feel LSU is the more impressive team through four weeks of play. The rest of the top 10, with the exception of Texas A&M, fared well too, going 8-1 as a group (Stanford did not play).

Risers and Fallers: This week's biggest 2011 College Football Rankings Week 4jump comes from the Clemson Tigers (No. 21 to No. 13), which improved to 4-0 with a 35-30 win over ACC rival Florida State. Coincidently, the 'Noles, who were ranked No.11 going into this weekend's contest, are this week's biggest faller as they dropped all the way back to No. 23. FSU lost its big matchup with Oklahoma the previous Saturday and it also lost starting quarterback E.J. Manuel in that game to a shoulder injury. Manuel did not suit up against Clemson on Saturday, but freshman QB Clint Trickett acquitted himself well in the loss, throwing for 336 yards, three touchdowns, and just one interception.

The aforementioned Aggies and Mountaineers also saw their stock drop, with A&M going from No. 8 to No. 14 after a 30-29 setback against Oklahoma State and West Virginia falling from No. 16 to No. 22 after suffering its LSU beating.

Arkansas took a big hit as well (No. 14 to No. 18) as the Razorbacks failed miserably in their bid to upset No. 3 Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The Tide won the game 38-14 to improve to 4-0 and maintain their place in the top five.

Movers and Shakers: This week only one team made its way into the top 25 and it did so at the expense of the only team to fall out of the top 25. Arizona State, which slipped out of the rankings last week with a loss at Illinois, pounded No. 23 USC 43-22 at Sun Devil Stadium to move into the No. 25 spot.

Goodbye, for now: As mentioned, the Trojans found the exit and, due to their ugly showing, did not draw a single vote to stay in the top 25.
