Kansas City recorded its first win of the
season last weekend, taking out the Vikings 22-17 at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs turned in by far their most impressive performance of the year, despite settling for five field goals from kicker Ryan Succop.
Quarterback Matt Cassel completed 18-of-29 passes for 260 yards and one touchdown while wide receivers Dwayne Bowe and Steve Breaston combined for nine catches, 198 receiving yards, and one score.
Kansas City's once formidable ground game clearly missed the presence of Jamaal Charles as it accounted for just 103 of the Chiefs 350 yards, but it did enough to take some pressure of the beleaguered Cassel.
Defensively the Chiefs gave up 341 total yards to Minnesota, but, more importantly, they kept all-world running back Adrian Peterson in check. Peterson rushed for a team high 80 yards, but he averaged just 3.5 yards per carry and he failed to find the end zone.
Indianapolis was not as fortunate in its bid for a first win, falling 24-17 at Tampa Bay on Monday night. The Colts turned in a game effort, but truth be told they were fortunate to keep the game within seven points.
The Buccaneers finished the night with 25 first downs and 466 total yards, but they routinely halted their own progress with one stupid penalty after another (14 for 106 yards). Tampa's mistake riddled performance allowed the Colts to hang around most of the evening, despite its inability to move the ball effectively. Get $50 in Free NFL Picks Here.
About the only bright for Indy in the loss was the play of wide receiver Pierre Garcon, who caught two passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns. Garcon's run after the catch ability made quarterback Curtis Painter's numbers look far better than they actually were as he completed just 13 of his 30 pass attempts.
