2010 NFL Week 5 Point Spreads & NFL Picks: The Chicago Bears [+1] will have to play without quarterback Jay Cutler against the sports betting odds favorite Carolina Panthers [-1] on Sunday for Week 5. This will be the first time that Cutler will be out due to an injury. It all happened in last week’s game against the Giants, where the Bears lost 17-3 and when Cutler was sacked a total of nine times in the first half. The 27-year old quarterback took quite a beating.
During one of the sacks in the second quarter, Cutler was pinned by Giants DE Osi Umenyiora from behind, making him pop the ball into the air and ultimately landing in the arms of Giants center Olin Kreutz. He was hit so hard that he mistakenly walked to the wrong sideline before realizing where he was.
Todd Collins took over in the second half, and will start on Sunday against the Panthers. This will be Collins first start in three years against Carolina. "I'm pretty comfortable," Collins said. "The best way to provide leadership, I think, is to go out there and perform well. That's the job as the quarterback, to move the ball and score points. That's what I'm going to try to do to help lead the team."
As for Cutler, he was at practice on Thursday on a limited basis. He was mostly seen watching Collins and backup Caleb Hanie practice throwing to receivers. Cutler is said to be at practice on Friday, and will be examined by doctors again next week.
