Oklahoma vs Texas 2011 College Football Picks Week 6: The No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Sooners and No. 10 Texas Longhorns will clash Saturday (Noon ET) in the annual Red River Rivalry Game played at old Cotton Bowl Stadium with the Texas State Fair as backdrop. Tickets for the game are split evenly between Oklahoma and Texas fans at a venue of equal distance from each campus. These games are generally closely contested too; having to go back to 2006 when the point difference was more than 10. Usually lined by College Football Odds experts in single digits; Saturday’s point-spread shows the Sooners to be 10 1/2-point favorites with the posted total (over/under) holding at 56.
The Longhorns suffered through a losing season in 2010, having to sit out the bowl season less than a year removed from playing Alabama in the BCS Championship Game. So far it seems coach Mac Brown has the Longhorns back on track, currently 4-0, coming off a conference win against Iowa State last week. The Longhorns have been a good bet covering the point-spread in three of four games.
Oklahoma, also at 4-0 SU, has covered ATS in three of four games, the only non-cover coming against Missouri in Week-3, beating the Tigers by 10 while laying -20. The Sooners are coming off a 62-6 victory over Ball State in Norman last week, covering ATS as -40 point chalk favorites.
The rejuvenated Longhorns are back in the Big 12 title picture behind a top-15 defense. That should prove to be a key matchup as OU quarterback Landry Jones has been nearly unflappable this fall, ranking fourth nationally in total offense at 362.5 yards per game while checking in 14th in passing efficiency. He has guided the Sooner offense to a No. 4 ranking with 555.0 yards per game while averaging 42.5 points per contest (11th).
The Sooners are double-digit favorites for good reason. The Longhorns are ranked and undefeated but this is a team undermanned and short in depth. None of their wins have come against ranked competition. What it boils down to; the Longhorns have not been tested and OU has. The Sooners are 2-0 against teams who’ve been ranked this season while the Longhorns stiffest test was against Iowa State. The Longhorns will fight hard early but the Sooners should still win by a couple of touchdowns. My Pick – Oklahoma -10 ½.
