2011 NFL Odds Week 6: The impact Jim Harbaugh has had on his football team in his first-year of NFL head coaching cannot be undermined. With his eyes set on a division title, Harbaugh’s ability to get the best out of his players appears to be the difference between him and his predecessors.
As the (4-1) San Francisco 49ers [+4½] prepare to battle the undefeated, NFL Odds favorite (5-0) Detroit Lions [-4½] on Sunday, Harbaugh will need to work his magic yet again. After losing Braylon Edwards in Week 2, the Niners will have to replace yet another star wide out.
According to confirmed reports, Joshua Morgan has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2011 NFL season with a broken bone in his right leg. The former sixth round pick underwent surgery this past Monday, and has been placed on injured reserve. Morgan had 15 catches for 220 yards and one touchdown in his third year as a pro.
"His career will be fine," Harbaugh said. "We'll give him the time to really get it healed right. We'd like to fill Josh's shoes, and they're big shoes to fill, especially where Josh was at and the level Josh Morgan was playing at when he got hurt. We're fired up that Brett's here and we'll get him going as fast as we can."
After receiving news of the severity of Morgan’s injury, the Niners went out and signed former Green Bay Packer, (WR) Brett Swain for one year. Swain was drafted by Green Bay in the seventh round of the 2008 draft, but was placed on injured reserve after being demoted to the team’s practice squad. He was waived before the start of the 2011 season.
