But the Eagles woes are cake compared to what’s happening in DC. At the start of the week, the Redskins announced that head coach Jim Zorn would be stripped of his play-calling duties and that those would now be handled by his assistant Sherm Lewis. A few days later, ‘Skins executive vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato, publicly declared that Zorn would coach "the rest of this season and hopefully into the future," despite the perception that his job might be in jeopardy.
Zorn admitted that he contemplated quitting as head coach of the Redskins after this occurred, but decided to stay. "The reason I can comply with this is simply because of the lack of scoring," Zorn said about losing his play-calling benefits. "I want to win, too. If this has to be done this week, if this is going to be the key, I'm certainly willing to give it a try. Because we're 2-4 and to not score in the last few weeks, the way we have not scored, is very frustrating… Sometimes we have to do things that are uncomfortable."
But uncomfortable doesn’t quiet describe what else is brewing in the front offices of the Washington Redskins. Not only are the fans voicing their disgust, but now, some of the Redskins former execs are coming out and publicly criticizing team owner Daniel Snyder. It certainly seems that the common theme in DC is saying that Snyder is to blame for everything that’s wrong with this team.
The son of former Redskins owner, Jack Kent Cooke, told a local paper that Snyder has "destroyed the reputation of this franchise" in his 10 years as owner. John Kent Cooke went on to make this statement: "I sure as hell don't like the way he gutted the organization after we left. And he commercialized the Redskins like my father would have never commercialized the Redskins. People brought cushions and pennants to the games. You know how they got those? My father gave them out at fan appreciation days."
As far as the Zorn situation, Cooke stated: "Total madness. You've now undermined the authority of your coach. You don't have to say you'd never fire him. But just for the sake of stability, I would give Jim Zorn a vote of confidence and then say, 'Let's see how well he does.' It's a shame they continue to operate so recklessly."
