San Francisco, which is an overtime loss to
the Cowboys away from an undefeated record, won its fifth straight game last Sunday with a 20-10 thumping of the Cleveland Browns. The Niners 23rd ranked offense totaled 19 first downs and 348 total yards in the win while quarterback Alex Smith completed 15-of-24 passes for 177 yards and one touchdown.
San Francisco's defense held the Browns punchless offense in check as Cleveland finished the game with 290 yards, two turnovers, and a 2.9 yards per carry average. The 49ers also tallied four sacks and six quarterback hits in the 10 point win and cover.
Based upon the Redskins last three performances, the Niners, despite a cross-country trip, could be in for another winning weekend. Washington's strong 3-1 start now looks like a distant memory as the club has dropped three in a row by an average of 14.3 points per game.
The latest setback, a 23-0 loss at Buffalo, served as the team's worst showing of the season. Washington's offense managed just 10 first downs and 178 yards in the embarrassing performance.
Quarterback John Beck, who was sacked nine times by the Bills, threw two interceptions and the Redskins ground game produced all of 26 yards on 11 carries.
Those numbers do not bode well for Washington given the physical nature of the Niners defense, but NFL teams, even bad ones, have a way of bouncing back from ugly losses. The Redskins may not win this game, but the final score might be a lot closer than people expect.
