Green Bay comes into this game fresh off
a bye and with an unblemished 7-0 record, but its pursuit at perfection, despite what the odds makers feel, could be in trouble today. San Diego, which is still by most accounts a quality team, comes into this game a wounded animal.
The Chargers, who have played their last three games on the road, are coming off back-to-back losses to the Jets and Chiefs. The Kansas City setback was particularly stinging as it lifted the Chiefs past the Chargers and into first place in the AFC West. It also could have been avoided had Philip Rivers not dropped a snap deep in Kansas City territory with the game knotted up at 20-20.
So, while this game will test the mental toughness of a San Diego team on short rest and, no doubt, still reeling from its Monday night meltdown, it will also be a big challenge for the Packers.
Green Bay is 4-0 in road action, beating Carolina, Chicago, Atlanta, and Minnesota, but it has shown a tendency to let down on occasion. The Panthers and Vikings both covered at home against the Packers and Carolina had the defending champs on the ropes for a good portion of their week two meeting.
Green Bay cannot afford to spot the Chargers much of a lead, but given their defensive struggles, they may not be able to prevent it. San Diego averages nearly 400 yards per game on offense, which almost matches the amount of yards the Packers give up on a weekly basis. In other words, the Chargers will get pletny of opportunities to put points on the board. A +6 home dog with motivation and firepower facing a mediocre defense? Sign me up.
