As I looked for upsets in AFC vs. NFC games, the first that jumps out at me is the inter-conference battle happening at Qualcomm Stadium. In that game, NFL Week 10 Point Spreads & NFL Predictions experts have listed the (5-3) Philadelphia Eagles [+2½] as the sports betting odds underdogs versus the hosting (5-3) San Diego Chargers [-2½]. With basically a field goal to play with, I like the Eagles in this one!
Taking a closer look inside the numbers, we can see that these teams appear to have a contrasting statistics. It seems that where one lacks the other excels and vice versa. For example, offensively, the Chargers have a better passing game (266 pypg) but their ground attack is simply pathetic (70 rypg). Where the Eagles have a solid rush attack (111 rypg) and are mediocre in the air (228 pypg). In total offensive yards per game these teams are nearly identical with San Diego racking up 335 and Philly tallying 338. They are also very similar in: points (SD: 26 vs. PHI: 27) and time of possession (SD: 28:09 vs. PHI: 27:42).
To me, the deal breaker as to why the Eagles can pull this off is on the defensive side of the football! In points, the Eagles (19 ppg) defense gives up a field goal per game less than the Bolts (22 ppg). But here’s where you can see the difference: third down conversion allowed (PHI: 35% vs. SD: 43%) and rush yards allowed (PHI: 100 vs. SD: 130).
