by John Day on Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Georgia vs Georgia Tech 2011 College Football Predictions:  The Georgia Bulldogs (9-2), ranked 13th in this week's BCS standings, will be playing No. 1 LSU in the Southeast Conference Championship Game in a week but before they can do that, they must take care of business with in-state rival  23rd ranked Georgia Tech (8-3) at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta.  ESPN will televise the game at 12:05 p.m. ET.

Georgia vs Georgia Tech 2011 College Football PredictionsOddsmakers at online sportsbook Bodog.eu list the Bulldogs 6-chalk College Football Odds favorites with a combined score (over/under) total of 53. The Yellow Jackets, coached by Paul Johnson feature a versatile spread option attack led by QB Tevin Washington that is 2nd nationally in rushing offense and 6th in passing efficiency. Georgia, coached by Mark Richt, counters with a defense ranked 2nd nationally against the run and 11th in scoring. Georgia Tech wrapped up its 2011 ACC regular season schedule currently in third place of the Coastal Division, but could end up tied for second if Virginia loses to Virginia Tech on Saturday. With Saturday’s 364-yard day at Duke, the Yellow Jackets brought their season’s average to 323.55 rushing yards per game; that’s almost identical to last year’s ACC-record average of 323.31. Tech has rushed for five or more TDs in four games and has 42 scores on the ground in 2011.

Georgia, coached by Mark Richt boasts one of the nation's top defenses, and it will be challenged by Tech's spread option offense. Last year, the Yellow Jackets held the football for 38:14, running 92 plays and tallying 512 yards of total offense (411 on the ground). Still, Georgia registered a 42-34 victory.

This season, Georgia ranks fourth nationally in total defense and second in rushing defense. The Bulldogs are riding a nine-game winning streak.  Tech (8-3) is coming off a 38-31 road win over Duke last Saturday where it posted 549 yards of total offense. Meanwhile, Georgia captured the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division crown after beating Kentucky.

After losing its first two games opening the 2011 campaign, the Bulldogs caught fire and peeled off nine straight wins and covered the betting spread in 7-of-9. On the season, Georgia is 7-3-1 ATS. The total went Under the number in 6-of-11 games. After opening the season with six straight wins, Georgia Tech lost three of its previous contests entering Saturday's final with the Bulldogs. In totals betting, the number went over the first five games followed by under results the next three. The last two games the scores went over.

Georgia Tech's triple option offense can give any team trouble but I don't see the Yellow Jackets challenging the Bulldogs through the air. My Pick- Georgia Tech -6.
