2011 Heisman Trophy Odds: Robert Griffin III Predicted Winner

by John Day on Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

2011 Heisman Trophy Odds: Robert Griffin III Predicted Winner: The 2011 Heisman Trophy is awarded annually to the college football player deemed most outstanding in all of NCAA football, and for the 76th time, will be awarded to a deserving player this Saturday as the 2011 Heisman Trophy Awards banquet in New York City. The winner is determined by a vote of designated members of college fotball media, coaches, and previous winners. If there is any one player talked about as a probable winner most this season, it's Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck. In the preseason, Luck was considered the Heisman favorite along with Alabama running back Trent Richardson. Then, from nowhere, came Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, like a horse charging from behind to win the Kentucky Derby, and is projected to win the award.

Griffin, or RG3 as commonly called, capped off the 2011 regular season with a monster game in Baylor's win over Texas last Saturday, becoming a trendy favorite two days before ballots were cast (Dec 5). Odds makers at online sports book BetOnline.com, seem to agree listing Griffin number one on their offshore College Football Odds board coming off at -750. Translating the odds into something the general public can understand; to win $100 at -750 odds, a wager of $750 would be required. So as you can see, Griffin is a heavy odds-on favorite to win. If Griffin wins the award as predicted, it would be a huge upset. Less than a month ago on Nov. 16th, Griffin was listed on the BetOnline.com Heisman Trophy board as a +10,000 longshot. Had a person played $100 at that time, a reward of $10,000 would be paid if Griffin wins.

"It's seldom a good thing to be the favorite in the preseason," said College Football Handicaper Reno Gold of Sports-Odds.com. "The winner goes to the kid with the hot hand at the end of the season, and Griffin fits the bill. He is much more exciting than Andrew Luck, the perfect technique quarterback, and has grabbed the attention of voters."

Also joining the Heisman Trophy conversation is Tyrann Mathieu, the only defensive play in the field. While it's unlikely, at +2000 odds, Mathieu wins, he's drawn enough attention to knock early favorites, like Boise State's Kellen Moore out of the group of finalists.
