Atlanta (7-5) really had things rolling
headed into last week's meeting with the Texans at Reliant Stadium. The Falcons had won five of their previous six games and they, seemingly, caught a break by drawing an injury depleted Houston team.
Atlanta's momentum and the Texans health woes did not matter, however, as Houston knocked off the Falcons 17-10. Neither team lit it up offensively, but the Texans controlled the clock with a 44 carry, 162 yard day on the ground. Their effort left Atlanta and quarterback Matt Ryan scrambling for opportunities, a fact that was evident in Ryan's final stat line. The four year veteran turned in his worst performance of the season, completing 20 of his 47 pass attempts for 267 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions (50.6 passer rating).
Now the Falcons get another difficult road test against the dangerous Panthers as they look to stay in the thick of the NFC playoff race. Carolina, a team Atlanta beat 31-17 at the Georgia Dome in mid-October, has won two games in a row and its offense is looking more potent every week.
The Panthers, now 4-8 overall, have scored a total of 100 points in their last three games (33.3 ppg), which suggest that when rookie quarterback Cam Newton takes care of the ball, Carolina's offense is a serious threat to any defense. Newton's ball security, despite a horrific outing at Detroit three weekend's ago, has been much improved of late.
Newton threw nine interceptions through the first six weeks of action, but he has tossed just five picks, four of which came in the aforementioned Lions' game, over the last six weeks.
Atlanta looks and plays like the better of these two teams, but Carolina is more than capable of pulling off the upset here. The Panthers chances of doing that will, most likely, depend on Newton, who threw three interceptions in his first crack at the Falcons.
NFL Predictions Betting Trend: The Falcons are 4-2 against the spread and 5-1 straight up as a road favorite against a divisional opponent with a spread between 0 and 3.5.
