NFL Odds Week 15: Road underdogs dominated the scene last weekend, going 7-4 against the spreadwhile pulling off three outright upsets. Teams catching points on the road have now produced a winning against the spread mark in nine of the fourteen weeks played. Among the little guy ranks this week are the Jaguars, Redskins, Panthers, Jets, and Browns. Not the most formidable group, but that hardly matters when it comes to defeating the number.
Carolina Panthers vs Houston Texans (-6.5): Carolina has hardly been a road power this season, posting a 2-4 record away from home, but it has won its last two games as a visitor. Granted the Colts and Bucs are far less frightening than the Texans, but the Panthers are catching Houston in a good spot here. The Texans just sealed their first division title and playoff berth, which makes this weekend’s game the perfect letdown spot. Houston also has a rookie under center in T.J. Yates, and while Yates has played well since taking over the injured Matt Schuab, he is still green. No, Carolina’s 24th ranked defense will not scare Yates, but that may be the thing working against Yates and the Texans in this case. Again, another letdown factor…the subconscious “we got this” element. Cam Newton also represents a difficult and different challenge for Houston’s top ranked defense. The Texans have yet to face a quarterback like Newton, one whose legs are as big a threat as his arm.
