The New York Giants regained control of the NFC East last weekend in Dallas, now they will attempt to retain their lead as they host division rival Washington this Sunday. Washington has been one of the least impressive teams over the last two months of play, losing eight of its last nine games, but somehow it put a scare in the mighty Patriots this past Sunday. The Redskins, who have seen an offensive resurgence over the last few weeks, nearly pulled off the upset, falling 27-34 to New England.
Stunningly, Washington out-gained the Patriots 463 yards to 431 and it posted 25 first downs to New England’s 22. Quarterback Rex Grossman, whose return to the starting role has, seemingly, been the impetus behind the Redskins recent offensive revival, completed 19-of-32 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
While Grossman’s performance was notable, he was outdone by running backs Roy Helu and Evan Royster, who combined for 170 yards on 33 carries. All three players will need a similar effort this weekend if the Redskins are to have any shot at overcoming the Giants.
New York, which fell 28-14 at Washington in week one, has lost four of its last five games, but it has played well the last two weeks. The Giants almost handed Green Bay its first loss two week’s ago before eventually losing 38-35, but they bounced back with a dramatic 37-34 victory at Dallas on Sunday night. New York posted an incredible 510 yards against the Cowboys as Eli Manning connected on 27-of-47 passes for 400 yards.
The Giants have not been overly impressive at home this season, going 3-3 at MetLife Stadium, but they have had their way with Washington of late. New York won six straight against its divisional rival prior to its season opening loss to the Redskins and it has won eight of its last 10 as a host against Washington.
