The Green Bay Packers will travel to Kansas City this weekend to face the lowly Chiefs. On the line for the Packers? A 19 game win streak and an opportunity to wrap up the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs. Neither of those things would appear to be in jeopardy with the Chiefs standing opposite Green Bay on the gridiron. NFL odds makers are, like most people, anticipating a Packers blowout as they are currently a -13.5 against the spread road favorite. Green Bay has experienced its share of close calls this season, but last Sunday’s meeting with the Raiders did not qualify as one. The Packers, just a week after narrowly slipping past the Giants in New York, drubbed Oakland 46-16 despite Aaron Rodgers turning in his worst performance of the season. Rodgers completed 17-of-30 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception for a 96.7 passer rating.
Green Bay somehow managed to overcome Rodgers ‘uninspired’ effort because Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer looked like the second coming of JaMarcus Russell. Palmer accounted for four of Oakland’s five turnovers with a four interception performance.
Green Bay and its faithful following are, no doubt, expecting a similar blowout at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. The Chiefs have dropped five of their last six games and they are operating with an interim head coach in Romeo Crennel. Crennel, who has served as KC’s defensive coordinator the past two seasons, assumed the top job earlier this week after Chiefs General Manager Scott Pioli canned Todd Haley.
Crennel, who, by all accounts, has the respect of the Chiefs locker-room, wasted no time in making a significant roster move. Tyler Palko, who took over as the team’s starting quarterback after Matt Cassel went down with a hand injury, got demoted to third string by Crennel. The former Browns’ front man indicated that the recently acquired Kyle Orton would be the first stringer if his injured finger allows him to be; in the event that it does not, rookie Ricky Stanzi will get the start against Green Bay.
If Orton is able to go, he provides a huge upgrade over Palko, and would seemingly give the Chiefs their best opportunity to stun Green Bay and the rest of the football world. Go ahead, scoff, laugh…giggle yourself silly at the very idea of a KC win, but do not dismiss a Chiefs cover. Kansas City is 9-1 against the spread in its last 10 games as a home dog with a total between 44.5 and 47.
The Packers have appeared dismissive of their opposition on a few occasions this season (i.e. at Minnesota, at Carolina, at New York), but if they ever had reason to roll the helmets on the field it is this weekend. That typically comes back to bite teams, though, even ones the caliber of Green Bay.
