At 10-3 the Patriots come into tomorrow’s game the three seed in the AFC. While New England owns the same record as Houston and Baltimore, it currently loses out to both teams in the tie-breaker department. That means the Patriots stretch run, which includes meetings with Denver, Miami, and Buffalo, is critical to the AFC playoff picture.
New England appears to be in cruise control at the moment, having won five straight games, but its last four opponents, Kansas City, Philadelphia, Indianapolis, and Washington, are a combined 14-38 on the season. That means Denver, which is 3-3 at home this season, represents the most significant threat Tom Brady and company have seen in quite some time.
Word out of New England is that Patriots coach Bill Belichick has been practicing and pushing for a fast start this weekend. Should Brady and his cohorts dump a bunch of early points on the Broncos, much like Detroit did in Denver’s last loss, they will alter the Broncos grind it out, clock eating offense theoretically forcing Tim Tebow into a more traditional quarterback role.
Tebow, despite some pedestrian numbers, has excelled running Denver’s option/spread/West Coast offense, but he has seldom had to bring the team back from a significant deficit. Tebow has yet to prove he can drop back and throw the ball down after down.
The other factor here, though, is the Patriots defense. While the Broncos are more adept at the slow approach, they have shown an ability to put a lot of points on the board against weaker defenses, which is exactly what they will face tomorrow. Denver topped the 30 point mark against Oakland and Minnesota and each of New England’s last three opponents scored over 20 points.
So, even if the Pats do rack up some early points, do not underestimate the Broncos ability to match them.
